Nas’ presence in the hip-hop industry is unprecedented. He almost wrote the book on making hip-hop music, but he published it through music. His debut album, Illmatic, has influenced a generation full of rappers. Released in 1994, Illmatic is Nas' debut album, which is revered as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. The album peaked at number 2 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number 12 on the Billboard 200 chart. The record spawned Nas’ colossal hits, “Halftime,” “It Ain’t Hard to Tell,” “The World is Yours,” and “One Love.” Illmatic may not have peaked at number 1, but it became a turning point for the East Coast hip-hop scene. The album contributed to hip-hop revival in New York, Nas’ hometown. Illmatic still holds much relevance in modern hip-hop.
