As summer comes rushing in, it's time to get those plans marked as Billy Idol just announced this year's round of "It's a Nice Day to... Tour Again". Known for his rise in the 70s as part of the London punk-rock scene, he kicked off his solo career as part of the MTV-led "Second British Invasion" in America. Making a mark as one of the most respected icons in the music industry, he's got a ton of big hits, including "Rebel Yell", "Eyes Without a Face", and "White Wedding". Dominating radio stations for decades now, new rockers also tuned in as his hits kept dominating throwback playlists on streaming platforms. Gaining a slew of Grammy nominations and a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in his career, there's no doubt that he's down to keep his rockin' legacy up on stage.
Born William Michael Albert Broad, the one and only Billy Idol is one of the biggest rockers in history. Selling over 40 million records around the world, his work (post-Generation X) includes seven studio LPs, a live album, seven compilation albums, three EPs, and 37 singles that shook the souls of rockers worldwide.
His stage name actually has a quirky story... it's all thanks to a chemistry teacher named "Bill Price" who described Broad as "idle" in his report card. The singer had shared how much he hated and underperformed in chemistry, and of course it all worked out as he just kept rockin' on.
"It was a bit of a goof, but part of the old English school of rock. It was a 'double thing', not just a poke at the superstar-like people... It was fun, you know?" Idol shared in ConcertVault interview from 1983.
Back in '76, Idol first joined the up-and-coming retro-rock band Chelsea as a guitarist, formed in West London. Every wondered what inspired his iconic style? That platinum-blonde spiky hair, leather jackets, crew cut? Well it's all because of Gene October, the frontman of Chelsea. He recommended Idol to use contact lenses and dye his hair blond whil;e sporting a crew cut. While Idol quit the band after a few weeks to lead his own, it's no doubt that fellow rockers made a great impact in his massive success. His new band, Generation X, made him one of the first punk rockers to appear on BBC's "Top of the Pops".
In 1981, the man kicked off his solo career with a big move to New York. He worked with Bill Aucoin - Kiss' former manager, and released his self-titled debut LP a year later. Making it to the top forty five of the Billboard 200, and hitting #5 in New Zealand, his work became strongly associated with the "Second British Invasion" of the US, driven by MTV's impact at the time. Lucky fans, who were there since his glory days, will definitely remember that "White Wedding" and "Dancing with Myself" were staples on TV.
The release of "Rebel Yell" in 1993 marked even greater success in his career. Its title track, "Eyes Without a Face", and "Flesh for Fantasy" became some of his discography's most recognizable and renowned anthems.
Becoming known for concerts that are theatrical and nostalgic showcases of his five-decade career, expect rock-out nights of hits, deep cuts, and surprises that'll get your heart pounding real hard. Every single guitar riff, anthemic melodies, astounding vocals, and electrifying energies will blow you away.
With an extended "It's a Nice Day to... Tour Again" crossing over this summer, you gotta be part of the party. The best seats in the house are stilll up for grabs, book those tickets now!
